5 Burning Questions For Wisconsin's Football Season

Regardless of how good a team is projected to be in any given season, all college football programs have questions surrounding their season. Despite a preseason No. 4 ranking in the AP poll, only fueling the already high expectations from the fanbase, Wisconsin is no different.

In order for the Badgers to win at least 10 games for the fifth consecutive season, and potentially make the College Football Playoff for the first time, the Badgers will need to answer these five questions starting with tonight’s opener against Western Kentucky

5. Can Zack Baun and Tyler Johnson take pressure off of Andrew Van Ginkel?

Van Ginkel registered two tackles for loss, one sack, recovering a fumble that he forced, picked off two passes and deflected three others. Throw in the critical plays he made in a backup role against Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game and the Orange Bowl, there’s no question Van Ginkel is ready for an expanded role in the offense. The big question now is can Baun and Johnson be ready for their opportunity?

Baun will start opposite of Van Ginkel after missing all of last season with a foot injury. In only 12 career games, Baun has shown flashes of being able to create pressure, registering 3.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Can he do it consistently?

Johnson has appeared in more career games (21) than Baun but they were mostly on special teams duty up until last year. A former walk-on, Johnson served as the backup to Leon Jacobs last year and finished the season with eight tackles, not to mention registering a tackle for loss and a forced fumble in consecutive weeks.

If Baun and Johnson can show to opposing teams they need to be accounted for, it will make Van Ginkel more able to make those game-changing defensive plays.
