Five Keys To Victory - No.15 Wisconsin vs. No.12 Michigan

Wisconsin and Michigan are squaring off for the third consecutive year, a series that the Wolverines own the upper hand in all time (50-15-1) but one the Badgers have dominated as of late (4-2 last six meetings, 3-1 last four). A victory tonight won’t be easy for Wisconsin, which is banged up in the defensive backfield and will have to play a perfect game if they want to leave the Big House with a victory.

For Wisconsin, here are the five things they need to do to beat Michigan.

1, Control the Clock

Wisconsin is known for wanting to control the football with its run game, setting up manageable third downs and easy passes to keep drives alive. The Badgers have been highly successful at this through five games, possessing the football an average of 35 minutes, 9 seconds. That number has increased through two conference games, as the Badgers lead the conference in time of possession at 35:23. Right behind the Badgers is Michigan, ranking second at 35:16 and capable of beating Wisconsin at its own game. It’s vitally important that Wisconsin can consistently sustain drives against a Michigan defense that’s allowing a total of 184.7 yards over conference play.

The play of Wisconsin’s offensive line is critical to allow Jonathan Taylor and the run game the holes they need to consistently pick up positive yards. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see the Badgers use some quick throws, whether it’s a slant or a bubble screen, to try and move the chains. Wisconsin’s ability to consistently pick up third downs will go a long way in order to help give its defense a rest and help generate an offensive rhythm.
