Three Things To Watch: Wisconsin vs. UW-Oshkosh

After playing a scrimmage against Iowa State under the shroud of secrecy Sunday, Wisconsin plays its lone exhibition game tonight against UW-Oshkosh.

Although Wisconsin historically has overmatched its past opponents from the WIAC conference, including beating the Titans, 96-44, in 2012, UW-Oshkosh will enter Madison coming off a successful season that advanced all the way to the Division 3 championship game.

In this Badgers Insider feature, we will look at the three keys or questions for Wisconsin as they prepare to play UW-Oshkosh in its final preparation before the start of the 2018-19 season.

FREE THROW: CREATING A RHYTHM ON OFFENSE

Being that it’s an exhibition game, expect head coach Greg Gard to utilize constant subbing to mix and match combinations to develop his rotation. This will make it difficult for Wisconsin’s offense to generate a consistent rhythm, but Gard will likely stick with his starting lineup to start the game for a while to see what his starters can accomplish. In Wisconsin’s closed scrimmage against Iowa State, according to Jim Polzin of the Wisconsin State Journal, the starters were D’Mitrik Trice, Brad Davison, Khalil Iverson, Nathan Reuvers, and Ethan Happ.

Assuming that’s the starting lineup Gard elects to use again, that group will face a defense that allowed opponents to shoot 42.5 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range last season. If Wisconsin can protect the ball, which was a huge problem at times last season (11.1 per Big Ten game), the offense can work the ball around to create an open shot.

In particular, Wisconsin should have success attack the paint since the Titans don’t have the size to matchup with either Happ or Reuvers. If Happ or Reuvers can get the better position down low, they should be able to use one of their post moves to get an easy look around the basket.
