Who Are The Most Important Badgers Against Penn State?

The last time Wisconsin faced Penn State was in the exciting 2016 Big Ten Championship game, which resulted in Wisconsin coming up short of winning its first Big Ten title since 2012.

Wisconsin will look to snap its three-game losing streak against Penn State by trying to win in State College for the first time since 2003. In order to snap the streak, the Badgers will likely need to rely on sophomore Jack Coan making his second start in three weeks with Alex Hornibrook (head) unlikely to play.

The rankings for the Front Seven are determined based on performance from last week, expectations this coming week and need. Here are our seven players most important in helping the Badgers to a victory over Penn State.

Last Week’s Rankings in Parentheses

7, Left Guard Michael Deiter (6)

Due to Jonathan Taylor having a bounce-back game against Rutgers and the Badgers likely to have Jack Coan under center, the Badgers are likely to try and establish the run against the Nittany Lions rush defense, which is allowing 184.2 yards over Big Ten play. For a young quarterback like Coan, his best friend can be the run game and its success can help open up the passing game. In order to help take pressure off of Coan and Taylor, it will begin with the play of Deiter and Wisconsin’s offensive line. Deiter has been up and down through nine games this season and he’ll have to put together a complete game in order for Wisconsin to have offensive success. In particular, Deiter is going to have to make sure he doesn’t commit a holding penalty or is called for a false start. Wisconsin can’t afford to lose yards and be working behind the chains against Penn State’s defense.
