Olive Sagapolu Out For The Season With Arm Injury

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin will be without one of its key seniors for the stretch run of the season, as nose tackle Olive Sagapolu has been ruled out indefinitely with a right arm injury.

Head coach Paul Chryst made that announcement Thursday about Sagapolu, who sustained his injury in the second half of the Badgers’ loss at Northwestern Oct.27. He underwent surgery on his arm Wednesday.

In eight games this season, Sagapolu registered 23 tackles (14 solos), 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. He finishes his UW career with 44 games played and 27 starts.

It’s the second significant arm injury in Sagapolu’s career. He missed five games in 2016 after sustaining a thumb injury, finishing out the season with a protective cast.

The absence of Sagapolu will create a bigger role for true freshman Bryson Williams, who has played in all nine games and made his first career start last week in the win over Rutgers.

“I thought Bryson did some good things,” Chryst said. “What’s fun about anything in this game is it takes everyone. Bryson did a lot of things, maybe not all of them showed up on the stat sheet. I like the way he’s playing. I like the way he’s competing. He’s playing with no hesitation and gives us good energy. He’s getting better.”

In addition to quarterback Alex Hornibrook (head) listed as questionable, the Badgers list cornerback Deron Harrell (right ankle) and free safety Scott Nelson (right hamstring) as questionable for this week’s road game at No.21 Penn State. While Hornibrook appears unlikely to play, defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard said Wednesday that both Harrell and Nelson had gone through team drills during the week, something they hadn’t been able to do in past weeks.

Nelson was hurt in the second half of UW’s loss at Michigan while Harrell was hurt in practice leading up to the Northwestern game.
