Graham Mertz isn’t quite ready to start focusing on the University of Wisconsin. The four-star quarterback made that abundantly clear with another dazzling performance Friday night.

One week after throwing for 282 yards and six touchdowns, Mertz threw for 527 yards, five touchdown passes and ran for another to lead Blue Valley North to a 51-49 victory over Olathe North in the Kansas Class 6A semifinals.

Winning their sixth straight game, the Mustangs (9-3) will look to beat Derby for the second consecutive year in the Class 6A state title game.

“There’s always challenges, but we get together and we overcome them. Me and my brothers, I love them,” Mertz told the Kansas City Star. “It’s a crazy game. We had a 2OT (game) last year, and we just found a way to win. I’m proud of our guys.”

In a game that featured six lead changes, Mertz shook off a pair of interceptions to help keep the Mustangs in front in the second half, throwing touchdown passes of 15, 15, 27 and 38 yards.

“That’s what he does,” BVN coach Andy Sims told the Star. When you look at great quarterbacks, and I’m not talking about how to throw a football. There’s not a lot of guys who can lead. It’s the leadership qualities that separate great quarterbacks from even the good ones, and we’ve got a great one.”
