Wisconsin Game Day Grades - North Carolina State

Offense: A

North Carolina State’s defense made Wisconsin work for every point, as it was tough sledding for Wisconsin to get into a rhythm at times. After shooting 35.7 percent in the first half, the Badgers caught fire in the second half with a 62.1 percent clip (18-for-29) that helped them erase a 12-point second-half deficit. UW finished at 49.1 percent (18-for-29) shooting.

Wisconsin had four players in double figures and was led by 19 points from Ethan Happ, who was constantly contested around the rim and overcame a slow start (3-for-11 in the first half, 5-for-7 in the second). D’Mitrik Trice added 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, while Brad Davison and Aleem Ford each had 12 points.

Although Wisconsin finished the game with 30 points in the paint, as mentioned above, the Badgers had to work for their shots around the rim, evidenced by their 9-for-17 on layups. Happ was able to generate a more consistent rhythm in the second half, scoring 12 of his points, but UW needed to rely on the 3-point shot to take some pressure off the post defense. Wisconsin accomplished that by shooting 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from three, opening up the lane a little more in the second half for UW to score 20 of their paint points.

Trying to find a way to dig itself out of the hole they created, the Badgers were able to use some timely three’s to chip away at the Wolfpack’s lead. Four different players made at least one three for Wisconsin, while Trice and Ford each made four of their attempts to shoot a combined 8-for-12 in the game and 5-for-7 over the final 20 minutes.

The Wolfpack came out pressuring Wisconsin and the press caused some issues early, as the Badgers committed seven first-half turnovers. Using halftime to adjust, the Badgers limited their mistakes during the second half, only turning the ball over three times while registering 10 assists on their 16 made field goals.
