Derek Watt and T.J. Watt Square Off On Sunday Night

MADISON, Wis. – Even with three brothers in the NFL, J.J. Watt, Derek Watt or T.J. Watt have yet to have an opportunity where two brothers have been on the field on opposite sidelines against one another.

That will change on Sunday night.

Tonight’s NFL Sunday Night game features Derek’s Los Angeles Chargers traveling to Pittsburgh to take on T.J.’s Pittsburgh Steelers. The last time the two were on the same field was during Derek’s senior year in 2015, when Wisconsin capped off a 10-3 season with a victory over USC in the Holiday Bowl.

T.J. Watt is having a monster season for the Steelers, registering 50 tackles, 10 sacks and forcing four fumbles, a big reason he leads the AFC outside linebackers in the Pro Bowl balloting. Derek Watt hasn’t put up the monster stats but the tailbacks he’s blocking for have, as the Chargers are averaging 5.0 yards per carry and former UW tailback Melvin Gordon has scored nine rushing touchdowns.

Joining Chargers team reporter Chris Hayre on his podcast, Derek talked about the matchup between the two, this year’s Wisconsin football team and many other topics.

“In college, T.J. had converted over to linebacker, so we went up against each other in practice a couple times, but that’s not the same,” Derek said on the podcast. “In a game, it’s a lot different, especially at this level. It’ll be pretty cool.”

“This is the first time my parents will see a potential block on one another, and either way, just being on the field at the same time will be really cool for them.”
