Wisconsin Signing Class Preview - Clay Cundiff

Recruiting Competition

Cundiff flipped his commitment to Wisconsin from Kansas in October during his official visit to Madison. When he committed to the Jayhawks, he had offers from a handful of MAC and FCS schools. He had also taken visits to Arizona State, Iowa State and Kansas State.

Ranking

Cundiff is a three-star prospect with a rating of .8335 on the 247Sports Composite Rating (1.00 is tops)

Why Wisconsin?

“I loved it there. I always thought I wanted to go there. It’s kind of been my dream school. (The UW-Michigan game in 2017 was) something I’ve never experienced before. It’s a great atmosphere. Their fan base is just amazing.” – Cundiff said to 247Sports

My Take

After not landing (or really even recruiting) the state of Kansas for several decades, the Sunflower State has suddenly developed into a mini-pipeline for the Badgers. UW surprised some by landing former eight-man football star Isaiahh Loudermilk in 2016 (who has already made an early impact on the program) and will bring in highly-touted quarterback Graham Mertz with Cundiff this year.

Signing later this month with fellow 2019 commit Hayden Rucci (Lititz, PA), Cundiff will likely be used in a similar situation at Wisconsin like he was used in high school, a tight end who can line up in multiple areas to confuse a defense.

Looking at next year’s group of scholarship tight ends on the current roster, all four (Luke Benzschawel, Jake Ferguson, Kyle Penniston and Comac Sampson) redshirted during their first year on campus, something Cundiff and Rucci will likely do next fall. There’s no question UW’s depth at tight end was hurt this season after senior Zander Neuville was lost for the season, so developing quality prospect at such a critical position for UW’s offense is a must going forward.
