Wisconsin Signing Class Preview - Quan Easterling

MADISON, Wis – With the early signing period for high school football players beginning on December 19, Badgers Insider takes a closer look at the recruits expected to sign with the University of Wisconsin.

In this edition, we examine Akron (OH) Archbishop Hoban fullback Quan Easterling

Senior Season

Easterling and Hoban finished the season a perfect 15-0, winning the Division-2 state championship Nov.29. Hoban won every game by at least 14 points, scored at least 31 points in every game and won its five playoff games by an average of 34.8 points. It was the fourth straight state title for the school.

Skill Set

Wisconsin hasn’t signed a high school fullback since Chris Pressley in 2004, so this decision to aggressively recruit a scholarship fullback is a rarity for the Badgers, who in recent years have moved bigger tailbacks or linebackers to the position instead (i.e. Alec Ingold, Austin Ramesh and Derek Watt). Watch Easterling’s tape, however, and understand the situation the Badgers are in and this move makes sense.

At 6-2 and 230 pounds, Easterling fires off the ball and is aggressive when he makes contact with defenders. He’s strong and athletic, especially when he hits the hole with a head of steam. His film is full of bone-jarring blocks, hitting a defender square in the chest and then getting good push/extension to stand that player straight up, taking them out of the play.

Starting the play either in the backfield or as an in-line tight end, Easterling has some versatility that fits well into a Paul Chryst offense, which likes to ask its fullback to block, pass catch and convert short-yardage situations. He can move in space and looks to be an ideal fit as a lead blocker in Wisconsin’s downhill running game.
