Wisconsin Signing Class Preview - James Williams

MADISON, Wis. – With the early signing period for high school football players beginning on December 19, Badgers Insider takes a closer look at the recruits expected to sign with the University of Wisconsin.

In this edition, we examine Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna cornerback James Williams.

Senior Season

Hurting his knee early in the season, Williams battled through his senior year to help his team win its second straight state title. He finished the year with over 60 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and registered both of his interceptions in one game.

“I feel like I did my job this season,” Williams said. “I got our team a state title, and I’m just excited now to (sign with Wisconsin).”

Skill Set

Chaminade Madonna is loaded with Division 1 talent year after year, so the fact that Williams was a four-year starter for the program speaks to the level of talent the 5-11, 175-pound prospect has. There’s little debate that experience is one of Williams’ biggest positive traits, especially with the high level of competition he goes against in practice and during games in south Florida. He’ll be the first to admit he needs to add weight, but Williams showed during his prep career that he’s not afraid to help out in run support. He moves well and keeps his man in front of him, preventing the deep pass, which also showcases his level of athleticism. He’s long, physical, tracks the bell well and is a competitor.

“I was more of a laid-back corner, like to play off (the receiver), but over the offseason I got to use to playing man and press that I got better at that,” Williams said. “I have speed, I have confidence and I’m just physical. No matter what it is, I can do whatever the team needs me to do. If the team needs me to play at safety, I can play safety. If they need me at nickel, I can play nickel. Whatever the coaches need, I can do it.”
