Jack Coan To Start Pinstripe Bowl For Wisconsin vs. Miami

MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin sophomore Jack Coan will reportedly start the Pinstripe Bowl next Thursday when the Badgers take on Miami at Yankee Stadium, according to a tweet from Coan’s father.

Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst confirmed the news to reporters Thursday morning, saying junior quarterback Alex Hornibrook had started to suffer reoccurring symptoms from his concussion sustained during the season.

“Number 17 is off redshirt, he will be starting in the Pinstripe Bowl game on dec 27 at Yankee Stadium,” Mike Coan tweeted. “Lets go!!!”

Coan, a native of Sayville, N.J.,  has played in four games this season and playing in the Pinstripe Bowl would mean he’s ineligible to use a redshirt this year.

Wisconsin is 2-2 in games Coan has played, as the sophomore has completed 60.1 percent of his passes for 442 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Hornibrook practiced to begin bowl prep earlier this month before suffering the setback. His first concussion was sustained somewhere during or after UW’s win over Illinois Oct.20. He sat out the following week in a road loss at Northwestern and returned the following week, only after a hit at the end of the first half in UW’s win over Rutgers “exacerbated the symptoms of the initial injury,” per a Wisconsin spokesman. He didn’t return in the second half.

Hornibrook sat out consecutive road games at Penn State and Purdue before returning to start the regular season final against Minnesota. He performed poorly, throwing for 189 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in a 37-15 loss to the Gophers.

Chryst said it’s too early to talk about Hornibrook’s long-term future beyond this season.

Currently UW has five quarterbacks on its roster: Hornibrook, Coan, redshirt freshman Danny Vanden Boom, freshman Chase Wolf (redshirting) and Graham Mertz, who signed his national letter of intent Wednesday.
