Predictions - Wisconsin vs. Miami

The Badgers Insider Staff gives our game and a score prediction for the 2018 Pinstripe Bowl between Wisconsin (7-5) and Miami (7-5).

Brian Becker – Wisconsin 27, Miami 20

Similar to last year’s contest against Miami, this game will come down to which team will get more consistent quarterback play between Wisconsin’s Jack Coan and Miami’s /Malik Rosier/N’Kosi Perry. Both teams will want to rely on the ground game -Wisconsin is averaging 268.4 rushing yards per game and Miami is averaging 197.3 rushing yards. If Coan can build off of his performance against Purdue (going 16-for-24 for 160 yards and two touchdowns), he’ll be able to help take some pressure off of Jonathan Taylor and Wisconsin’s ground game.

Taylor rushed for 130 yards against Miami a season ago and is averaging 165.7 rushing yards per game this season. The 2018 Doak Walker Award winner certainly has had some dominant performances this year with 11 100-yard rushing games, three 200-yard rushing games and a career-high 321 yards against Purdue. With Taylor averaging 7.1 yards per carry, he will be able to challenge Miami’s rush defense.

Defensively, Wisconsin has to force Rosier and Perry to beat them with their arm, preventing simple handoffs to either Travis Homer (80.8 rushing yards per game) or DeeJay Dallas (50.8 ypg). Miami’s passing game has been inconsistent so taking away the run is a must for the Badgers.

Despite this season not going as expected, Wisconsin will end it on a high note with Coan and the Badgers’ defense making enough plays to beat the Hurricanes.

Becker’s Record: 7-5

Billy Hirschfeld –Wisconsin 30, Miami 21

Wisconsin and Miami are not the same teams they were last year at the Orange Bowl.  Both teams ran into many obstacles to derail their once high expectations. One thing is certain, Miami still has a playmaking defense and Wisconsin has a lot of talent on offense. This should still be a high-intensity game, especially with the Hurricanes looking for revenge from last year.

Unfortunately, Miami will not be able to pull it off this night. Jonathan Taylor will have a dominating night and the Wisconsin defense will keep the Hurricanes from getting close in scoring.

Hirschfeld’s Record: 8-4

Logan Samp – Wisconsin 31, Miami 21

Both teams are looking to cap off disappointing seasons with wins with backup quarterbacks. UW announced it would start sophomore Jack Coan, removing the possibility of still redshirting him this year. Miami has announced it will start Malik Rosier, who hasn’t played in the last three games and threw three interceptions in the loss to Wisconsin last year. I think UW comes out and wins this game by double digits simply because I think their defense has came along towards the end of the year. Outside of that, the Badgers have some seniors on this team that want to go out on a high note and these guys have too much pride to be losing this football game.

Benjamin Worgull – Miami 24, Wisconsin 21

Wisconsin has alternated wins and losses all season, so this should be a Badgers win in theory. I have a hard time seeing it play out that way. UW’s offense should be better than it was against the Gophers with Jack Coan under center, Jonathan Taylor in the backfield and UW’s line mostly healthy (Michael Deiter is expected to play after missing a practice this week, while David Edwards is still questionable). Miami’s defense is really good but the Badgers can have success establishing the run and utilizing short passes, which Coan has shown to be more his speciality. Miami being without star defensive tackle Gerald Willis III won’t help matters.

Defensively, Wisconsin appears to have caught a break with Mark Richt naming Rosier the starter. A year ago, Rosier was 11-for-26 for 203 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in UW’s Orange Bowl win. The Badgers aren’t nearly the unit they were a year ago but still have some pieces that could make life difficult.

I have gone back and forth on this prediction and still can’t make up my mind, fitting considering the inconsistent nature of UW’s season. The Badgers have been a disappointment, so I’ll go with a disappointing finish to the season.

Worgull’s Record: 8-4

Worgull’s Record vs. spread: 6-6
